An explanation of differences in the Polycom VSX 7000 series

Polycom released the Polycom VSX 7000 series as a replacement to its already established Polycom ViewStation line. What follows is an explanation of the differences between the Polycom VSX 7000, VSX7000s and VSX7000e.

The Polycom VSX 7000 platform debuted in the early 2000s. The Polycom VSX7000 was the first and only initially released product. Its main features were inherent H.264 compression, 14Khz CD quality audio, and dual monitor emulation. The VSX 7000 also departed from the proprietary “People+Content” function, and the system was made H.239 compliant. This allow for sharing of computer content with non-Polycom manufacturers equipment. This was an issue when Polycom users attempted to videoconference with outside clients.

Later, the Polycom VSX 7000s set-top was released as an upgrade of the VSX 7000. The internal hardware remained the same, but dual monitor capability was added as a default option (the VSX 7000 required an additional second display adapter.) The Polycom VSX 7000s also added a VGA port on the first monitor, this allowed for the presentation of people and VGA computer content on one display. This product upgrade made it simpler to share computer content in a video conference call without the need of two LCD displays or other VGA capable unit.

Both the VSX 7000 and VSX 7000s are set-top systems designed to be placed upon a television or other display monitor as a self-contained unit. An alternative configuration took the form of the Polycom VSX 7000e.

Released as a rack-mount system, it has the ability to be installed in an I/T 19” rack. This allows for a custom installation of the system, which can be placed out of view, if so desired. But this requires the camera and microphones to be operated separately of the VSX 7000e Codec unit. The VSX 7000e is ideal for “clean custom installs” in higher-end conference room settings.

These Polycom video products offer great solutions depending on your configuration, room size and installation preference. The Polycom VSX 7000 and VSX 7000s are portable, easy-to-move solutions, while the VSX 7000e Polycom video unit is a fixed system, designed to be installed permanently in a finer conference room setting.
